A momentous day comes this Saturday as America celebrates her 250th birthday! But, we have to wonder, "How many more?" Since its beginning we have sought, "a more perfect union," as the preamble of the U.S. Constitution states it. That government system put in place was better than any other known to man. The foundation was rooted in Biblical principles, with many of the founders evangelical in their faith. The preaching of George Whitefield that ushered in the Great Awakening, provided much of the impetus for America's birth. There have been needed adjustments--particularly ending slavery, and giving women the right to vote--advancing "a more perfect union."
Sadly, this nation is no longer advancing, but declining--morally and spiritually. We are in freefall into the abyss. Perversion is proudly paraded, the slaughter of babies in the womb by the millions is celebrated, and law and order is denigrated. It would have seemed an impossibility that after Islamic terrorists flew planes into the Twin Towers in New York City, turning them to rubble that only 25 years later, the citizens of America's largest city would elect an Islamist socialist as Mayor, with more extremists likely to be elected, even to Congress.
We have only one hope--to return to the foundation of faith. "If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?" (Ps. 11:3). If there is to be survival as a country, there must be revival in the church!
In Prayer for Spiritual Awakening,
Dennis Thurman, Mission Strategist
