PARTNERS IN THE GOSPEL
[I wish all of you could have heard Dr. Mark Golden’s message at our Associational Meeting. Mark is the pasto of Bethel Baptist. I asked him for his sermon manuscript and he has shared it with me. For several weeks, we will share a portion with you. It is that significant! You will be blessed by reading it.

The identity of a Baptist church is rooted in a beautiful, biblical tension: we are fiercely autonomous, yet we are intentionally cooperative. As Baptists, we proudly maintain that no external hierarchy, bishop, or convention has authority over the local church; each congregation is self-governing under the lordship of Jesus Christ. However, our history and our convictions tell us that autonomy was never meant to be isolated. True New Testament churches do not live as independent islands, but as a family of faith voluntarily locking arms for a greater cause. When we gather as an association of churches, we are putting our Baptist ideas into motion—proving that while we are distinct in our local pews, we are fundamentally unified in our global mission.
This is the exact heart of what the Apostle Paul celebrated in the church at Philippi: a deep, uncompromised relationship where independent believers became true partners, discovering that we can always accomplish far more together for the Kingdom than we ever could alone. Writing from a dark Roman prison cell, bound to a Roman soldier, Paul did not feel abandoned because he knew he was spiritually tethered to a network of faithful congregations. In Philippians 1:3–5, he writes: "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now."
When we look at our association of churches through the lens of this text, we discover three foundational realities of our cooperative work together: the power, the privilege, and the purpose of being partners in the gospel.
[That is where we will pick up next week!]
