The preamble of the US Constitution states the intent "to form a more perfect union," indicating that this nation must always work toward improvement—that perfection will never be attained in this fallen world. Yet, the goal should be progress, even if perfection is beyond reach.
That may be said of a denomination as well. Sin taints everything, including Baptist life. For this reason, there are periodic scandals, disappointing decisions by some leaders, the continuing struggle to hold to "the faith once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude verse 3), difficulty maintaining unity, and a lack of focus on the Great Commission.
What we must ask ourselves is not, "Are we perfect?" but "Are we progressing toward perfection?" I know sometimes we read things on the internet (which, by the way, may be untrue) that upset us--and in some cases, understandably so. I do want you to know, however, that there is so much good still being done by the Haywood Baptist Association, the NC Baptist State Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention.
This is the week of prayer for our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions. As I consider these missionaries that we support with our prayers and giving, I see remarkable commitment and fruitfulness. I want to exhort you to pray, give, and partner with them in getting the Gospel out. Help us be better as we advance toward a more perfect union.
Your Fellow Laborer,
Dennis Thurman, AMS
