PROVIDENCE, OUR PLANS AND GOD'S PURPOSES

Providence is a composite word meaning to see in advance--and in theological terms conveys that an omniscient and omnipotent God knows in advance what is to be and by His power guides those events to the fulfilling of His purposes. We can and should make plans by studying God's Word and seeking God's will--yet in humility knowing God may have other plans than ours and accomplish even what we perceive to be His will in a manner unexpected.
Paul knew he had a mission. That was clear. He planned to go to Rome for "all roads lead to Rome" as they say in an effort to accoplish that mission. How the Apostle would get there was not according to his plan. He went there as a prisoner, by a storm, through a shipwreck--the amazing saga that unfolds in Acts 21-28. It concludes with Paul in Rome and Luke described it this way, "Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him," (Acts 28:30-31 NKJV).
For many of our churches, we will be planning budgets, preparing mission efforts, picking workers--with a view of 2026 to come. I trust we will pray, operate according to Biblical principles, use wisdom--all the while knowing that our plans need to align with God's purposes, YET in His providence how He accomplishes those plans, or sets them aside for unanticipated delays--even denials--know that He does all things well for His glory.
Here is the assurance:
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified." (Rom. 8:28-30).
So when you make plans for the new church year, ask God to guide you, and trust Him--knowing that He will build His church, as we march invincibly onward under the blood-stained banner of the cross. The very gates of hell cannot withstand our Conquering Christ and His soldiers.
Perhaps you are perplexed by a plethora of problems. Just know that in the end all will be well. God leads His dear children along. The old hymn states it lyrically.
In shady, green pastures so rich and so sweet
God leads His dear children along
Where the water's cool flow bathes the weary one's feet
God leads His dear children along
Some through the water, some through the flood
Some through the fire, but all through the blood
And some through great sorrow, but God gives the song
In the night season and all the day long
Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright
God leads His dear children along
Sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night
God leads His dear children along
Though sorrows befall us and Satan oppose
God leads His dear children along
Through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes
God leads His dear children along
Some through the waters, some through the flood
Some through the fire, but all through the blood
Some through great sorrow, but God gives the song
In the night season and all the day long
Praying for God's Grace, Guidance, and Governance,
Dennis Thurman, Mission Strategist
