Life is filled with uncertainty. As we have entered 2025, we may have plans and dreams, but we do not even know what we don't know. Remember the COVID-19 epidemic? How was that for an unexpected disruption? Then, there was the destruction from Hurricane Fred. Who could have foreseen that? The largest employer--the paper mill--shut down, with great impact on Haywood County family and church finances. More recently, we have been hit by an even more devastating storm from Helene. Would it shock you if there is a blizzard before this winter ends?
Have I made my point? I am not trying to depress you. There could be some unexpected blessings and unforeseen joys around the corner also. Please, Lord!
So, what do you do when you don't know what to do?
King Jehoshaphat faced an overwhelming pagan army and so cried out to God. "For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You," (2 Chron. 20:12).
That's what you do when you don't know what to do. Call upon the Omniscient, Omnipotent, and Omnipresent Lord of Glory! Confess your limited capacity and trust His limitless ability.
Our circumstances change from day to day, but God's faithfulness is unwavering. If you try to look around there will be enough to elevate your anxiety. If you try to look ahead there will be plenty of uncertainty. Look above! Rejoice in God's sovereignty and rest in His sufficiency. God gave Jehoshaphat victory as He led His heavenly host into battle when the people of God sang His praises! Sing more and sigh less--and see what God will do!
Yours in Faith,
Dennis Thurman, AMS
